Please introduce yourself?
My name is Will Bailey and I make filthy house tracks and new wave garage through to rolling techno in my studio, ‘The Boom Room’ and I f*ckin love it!
Mark Knight and Martinj Ten Velden have called you a leader of the new skool. Whats that feel like when big Dj’s such as that our singing your praises?
Well meeting Martijn at Prominence in Bristol when he headlined was very important looking back in my career as he began to support my music from then onwards and therefore Mark heard my music and I began to remix for Toolroom which was a huge step up for me. Id say to anyone producer starting out to carry your tracks with you ready to be able to give to DJs and producers you look up as you never know what might come of it.
Your born and bred in Birmingham. Where is your favourite place to play in your home city?
I really couldn’t single one but I love Godskitchen, Magnetik @ the Factory and the Q Club, all wicked venues that I feel at home in. I always get a lot of local support when I do play in Birmingham.
Over the past year you have had tracks signed to some big labels. Tell us a bit about that?
Well it started with Toolroom but since then with Calvertron/Alex Calver weve had remixes on CR2, Ministry of Sound and Finger Lickin Records which has been huge for us. Finger Lickin was always a favourite of mine and so to be approached by them was amazing. The Plump Djs have been supporting our stuff and they are heavily connected to Finger Lickin.
What’s been your biggest track so far?
An early big one for me was my remix for Toolroom of Mark Knight and Dinsdale’s ‘Crunch’ track. Mark Knight was himself supporting my rework of it. It did really well as a download and really kicked things off for me. As Twocker I think our remix of Slyde’s ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ was very popular along with our remix of Tom Day’s ‘Whisper’ for Ministry of Sound.
I have seen on your myspace you like to make the odd bootleg. Whats been your favourite to remake?
What have you got coming up on the production front for the rest of 2008?
There is lots due to come out on my own label ‘Simma Records’. My new track ‘ Screwball’ with my brother Mikey Hook will be out soon with a remix from one of my favourite producers Max Cooper. There is also a new one from myself and Digital Filth about to come out on there too. Twocker’s label is starting soon too which me and Al are very excited about.
In a time where techno/electro in the UK seems to be on a bit of a high who do you see as key UK DJs/producers?
I think in terms of the nu skool I’d pick Calvertron, Stupid Fresh, Mikey Hook, Mowgli and Foamo. These are all favourites of mine for production and the majority of what I play is made by the newer names in the scene. There is a whole load of up and coming producers bubblin.
Who are your heroes and who would you like to play with the most?
My heroes are Danny Rampling, Roger Sanchez, Armand Van Helden, Fatboy Slim, Marshall Jefferson, Yousef, the list could go on! Id love to meet Van Helden, he’s king of the basslines and he keeps coming back with sound after sound. Ive got huge respect for anyone who has helped create the house scene.
Over the last year you have visited many foreign countries through DJing
do you have a favourite place / venue?
Russia has been my favourite place, the crowd was so up for it ands excited it was crazy. The people were wicked, friendliest people ive met. The whole experience was ace. Get to Russia people.
On your days off, where would you be and what would you be doing?
Im in my studio everyday of the week and if im not in there ill be in Calvertron’s studio Twockin things up. And if for some strange reason im at home im probably eatin or watching rubbish old Van Damme films, or sleeping.
How would you describe the music that you play?
My style is a mixture of elements from garage, drum and bass, electro and obviously house music. My Dj sets have some tech thrown in too, anything goes. Djs don’t have to just have a certain style. People seem to think there are rules, play want you want and enjoy it.
I see that your playing at Global Gathering again this year. Whats it like to play in front of so many people? Are you nervous?
I don’t get nervous (I used to), but I do get excited and I cant wait for this years festival. I such a massive event to be part of.
