Steve Morley Questions – ClubTheWorld

1)       How did your career in music all begin?

As a child of 4 my father started to teach me music and from then on it became clear that I would have some sort of career in music. It was intended that I would become a classical pianist but in my teen years I got other ideas, much to the dismay of my father! Although later on he did understand my reasons and I got his blessing. My career in dance music really started when I signed my first ever record deal.

2)       You’re known for your abilities as both a DJ & producer.   Which do you prefer?

I love both to be honest as they are very different disciplines. As a producer and writer you create music, where as a DJ you blend music into a mix with the aim to create a journey through sound and emotions. I think if I really had to make a choice DJing would be something I could not do without, nothing beats the atmosphere and buzz you get from playing a good set and being one with your crowd.

3)       What’s your favourite piece of studio equipment and why?

Without a doubt these days my Apple G5 - as that is the heart of it all, running Logic Pro and a battery of soft synths.

4)       Would you say your musical tastes have changed over the years?

Not really, I have always been very broadminded with music. For me there are only two sorts of music, bad music and good music. No matter what style, good music always touches me in a way.

5)       You’ve played gigs all over the world, what’s one of your most memorable and why?

My most memorable gig was the first big one I did after my father died. I have never experienced such a mix of emotions before going on and during the set, one side very sad and thinking about him, on the other side very happy that I could do it and was able to play a great set.

6)       You’ve made some amazing records over the years including Dave Holmes -‘Samsara’, Starchild  - ‘Redemption’, Steve Morley -   ‘Reincarnations’ & ‘Touched by God’.   How do you go about creating a trance masterpiece in the studio?   When do you get most of your ideas?

Normally these tracks just happen. The most important thing is the inspiration and what is happening around me, a lot of ideas come while travelling or relaxing.

7)       List 3 of your all time favourite trance tracks?

1)       Matt Darey ft Marcella Woods – Beautiful

2)       Agnelli and Nelson – Embrace

3)       Maurice - Feline

8)       What do you think of the current trance scene, has it changed and if so for better or worse?

The current scene is not a shadow of what it used to be due to the well known period of decline in sales and airplay caused by a variety of events. Unfortunately that means now that it is harder then ever to hold on to a decent studio setup and getting the tracks released on the few remaining credible and well selling labels. There are signs of improvement though and I’m sure the industry will soon be healthy again be it in a different format then before.

9)       What does the future hold for Steve Morley?

A lot of new releases and remixes. I also hope to start working on my artist album very soon.

10)   Lastly, thanks for taking the time to do this interview.   Is there anything you’d like to add?

This must be the part where I can shamelessly plug my new upcoming release! Steve Morley ‘Touched by God’ out soon on Black Tiger Records.
