it's just getting stupid now, people come on and post events or spam, who don't ever bother to make any other contributions to the board.

and then they just go and repeat themselves and post the same details in random bollocks, with something like "hey all u mad clubberz!! is anyone going to CrapNight at CrapVenue???" or "join this competition, it's grreat!! i don't work for the company that runs it, honest!!!"

have a dedicated spam forum then all the event suggestions posts from non-members can go in there, then everyone's happy - people can still check the spam forum for ideas of places to go, and promoters can still post.

if you're needing someone to do it then i will happily volunteer.

doesnt work tho. they will still post in random bollox and where ever else they c fit. james/kev/etc will only have to move it to the spam forums and no1 will bother chacking the spam forums as they know it will be full of shit.

so basically we might as well contiue as we r now and just delete the crap

surely the obvious solution is a more appropriate level of moderation of the events forums?

with james away and sarah seeming to have a lower profile because of other CTW commitments, perhaps it's time to find a new moderator to help with the housekeeping. what do you think?

but that's the whole point, though. people will always post in random (they still do on gurn, etc), but it's not the right place for it and it distracts from the rest of the banter. it needs to be moved.

unless you want it to end up being the other way round -- that is, people don't bother checking random bollocks or the events forums because they're so full of shit -- then you need to do something. there's too many posts about the same events from the same people all the time in the wrong place.

totally agree with you alasdair, find a new mod to do this.

spam forum would be best. people can continue planning their nights out in events suggestions made by other members, i.e. their mates, not some promoter they don't know and won't ever meet, promoters can continue to try and entice people to go to their events in a spam forum. if people don't want to choose to read a spam forum that's their prerogative; but nobody should be forced to wade through spam when they all they want to do is get some banter with their mates in random.

p.s. i know i'm exaggerating this problem but it will only get worse.

if it's spam, why entertain it at all, let alone build a forum especially for it? just delete it.

i agree with tom that it may not be a huge problem now but as CTW grows, it will almost certainly grow too. if you get the culture and tools in place now, it will not become a problem in the future.

i think some people find the spam useful in deciding where to go on their night out. since there's no specific reliable club listings facility on the site yet, the spam does kind of come in useful (although it is mostly focused on london and the south).

i think the problem here wud be why would you ever post in a spam forum? no one likes spam so no one would look in it making it pointless to post in so the problem of spam in other forums would still be present

all spam posts would be moved there so that people don't have to sift through them in the other forums.

people shouldn't be forced to read through spam when they want to banter with their mates.

people who were genuinely interested in reading spam could still go and check the spam forum.

yeah sometimes they're moved.

but then sometimes there's other spam as well.

plus event suggestions should be from members, IMO. or else they're not really suggestions, are they?

i think some of this confusion arises from different definitions of spam.

we're talking about event listings right? i need to put on my BL broken record again but how about this solution.

- decide what the events forum wants to be.

- write a specific set of guidelines about who can post what, a format the titles must conform to (extremely helpful for scanning just the message headers on the forum page). there coul dbe a particular style for 'official 'CTW'-affiliated events and another for non-affiliated events (which is the 'spam' about which we are talking, i think)

- publish the guidelines

- moderate the forum according to the guidelines - posts which don't conform are simply deleted.

the events forums at BL operate this way and they are extremely well focused, i believe, on being informative. check it out:

http://www.bluelight.nu/vb/forumdisplay.php?forumid=35&ts=3f5f8366

here are the guidelines for that forum.

thoughts?

we still need a spam forum

OR

do what alasdair said, which sounds good; but you'd have to make sure there were no dupes in Event Suggestions, and also you'd have more posts to move to Past Events.

SO

just have a spam forum that non-active members post stuff into.

p.s. hello james & kevin.

I have deleted what I feel is spam. I move the events stuff from that forum to this week on a Sunday night or very early Monday morning. There have been some instances where people have registered on here and then their first post is their event - wrong, thta gets deleted.

What do we class as spam ...

a) Someone that consistently posts their events?

or

b) Someone that occasionally posts as a member in other forums but mainly posts their events stuff in the events forum?

Feedback please.

i'd say a) and maybe a bit of b)

but i think it's down to common sense; like if someone just mostly posts their events and then occasionally decides to bother to come "chat" to us, but it just consists of one post in the smut forum then that's not really bothering to make an effort to be part of the site, is it.

personally i don't think the spam should be deleted. move it to a spam forum and then clear out posts in there that are older than two months or so.

IMO, if people are posting up events, then it is good as it gives, us, the members an insight of whats on, so I think that aslong as it is kept in th events sect or *a what's on* sect then what harm!!!!!

I notice that on most post, peeps do post a reply saying it looks good, etc or what a blinding night they had!!!

This is after all about meeting peeps & arranging nights out, so having people post what's on is a help!!

I agree Miss [censored]

I read all of events posts as we do travel around ... and to be honest my local events that are posted, do only post in that forum

but there's a difference between an "event suggestion" and a blatant ADVERT by someone who doesn't give a toss about who you are, just as long as you're filling their pockets with your cash.

there's spam and there's event suggestions, IMO the two shouldn't be confused. the stuff wouldn't be deleted, it would just be in a different forum. half the stuff in the event suggestions forum is not even for stuff remotely near me anyway. having said that, if there's an event suggestion genuinely made by a member and it looks interesting, i'll read it and consider it, even if it's the other side of the country, but i don't bother reading any old spam.

as the site gets more popular and less london/southeast-centric it's gonna become increasingly difficult to wade through the events forum.

I disagree with the London / South East point, as many northern posts get put up as the Southern ones.

I think the whole idea of a clubbing web site is for info on clubs and clubbers as i only post my event on the site and hardly chat on the site is only due to not haveing time ,not because i dont want to know anyone, But when you talk about spam and random posters then you got to realise that sites are not just for people who are on it all the time only but for everyone that comes on the site whether it is once or lots of times or your be marked as clicky as long as promoters post in the approipiate area on the site which am sure the site is most welcome for new clubs and new events to try out then there should be no problem or your just be left with the same old events that either your m8's run.

Me personally think this site is one of the only sites that dont have that clicky members attitude yet.

So keep it fresh and freindly.

Well said scouse, I agree, aslong as it is in the correct forum, its A/ doing no harm & B/ informing peeps of different events, giving peeps choices!!

i give up on this anyway, considering the percentage of people who've replied to this thread out of all the members on the site, it's obvious i'm basically the only one who gets knotted with spam, so leave it as it is. i look forward to events suggestions being full of crap in six months' time.

(p.s. if anyone cares, an idea of what i was suggesting then check gurn.net, because i think they way they treat spam is brilliant. if you want it, you can read it. if you don't, you don't have to)

Yeah but it's getting sloly harder to trawl through the amount of events posted, and this will only get worse as time goes on and the site gets more popular, so i agree with tom on this.

well then it aint a clubbin site if there is only a select few events posted as it dont repesent the clubbing community and it dont make any difference if your a new member or old as i have been on this site for over a year your just making your selfs look clicky and makes new members more likely not to bother

didn't say only a few events posted, i meant move a lot of the stuff to a separate events forum like we used to have. Basically, hte ones who come on here, maske one post about their event and disapear never to be seen again.

you seem to be taking this personally for some reason? why would that be?

I personally feel that is no harm done if promoters come on post an event in the correct section, then do not post anywhere else... It gives me, a clubber a chance to see what is on etc..... If they did not ever post we would not know what was happening & where!!!!

Aslong as it is kept in the right forum & not posted all over then, what harm really is being done!!!!

I think peeps should lighten up.......
