whats everyones view on this. Seems like DJ sets are getting shorter and shorter these days. I personally think the whole idea of a set was to take you on a journey. hard to do really in an hour isn't it?

Agreed. I guess it reeks of trying to cram in a load of big names, at the expense of the actual music (though personally I've never witnessed a set shorter than 1.5 hours).

On the other hand, I think the concept of a 4+ hour set is a bit dubious and self-indulgent.

Totally agreed Tony/Liquid - defo a case of cramming in lots of names at the expensive of a good build-up

Its obvious, theres far too many wannbes flooding the market, most of them very average leaving the quality ones with very little time. All party of cramming as many "so-called" big names in as possible. Not enough events to cater for the amounts of DJ's now.

Even in the last 6 months things have changed - I started playing out in March, and the sets tended to be 1 1/2 hours, but recently, everything is 1 hour.

I suppose it is something to do with fitting in as many dj's as possible.

As a clubber, I quite like short sets, as I find it more interesting, as there is often more variety. Short sets are especially good if you are not enjoying a dj's set, as you don't have to put up with it for long!

But as a DJ, and hour is pretty wank, it really doesn't give give you any time at all - and you only get to play about 12 tunes! I think 1 1/2 - 2 hours is a nice time to play for, just long enough, without being too long!

She who laughs last, laughs longest.

..and its even more of a piss take when you've got to go back-to-back with someone - so you get to play like what, 5/6 records? great.

Personally DJ's doing a 3 hour extravaganza bores me to tears, you can find me asleep in the corner somewhere.

I think sets should be a minimum of 1.5 hours and a max of 2

Yeah iv noticed the sets gettin shorter.. i think 1 and a half hours to 2 is a better timescale to look at for a set.. maybe warm up sets could be 1 hour to leave the extra time for the 'main' djs to play a bit longer or somethin?!

what a lot of other people have said. i think it's to do with trying to fit as many big names as poss.

which i think is total and complete bullshit, and it's one thing which kept me from going to the HHA b4 last.

quantity not quality apparently?!

club promotors: "they'll be so fucked off their heads they won't care" - I'll bet you.

1:30 as an absolute minimum, 2 hours pref. 3 hours great.

only in hardhouse it does

a 3 hour techno or prog set really does take you on a jurney.

it only really seems to be in hardhouse that the DJs are booked w/o thought of the music. and theres a good reason for this, it doesnt matter how many DJs or how few you have in hardhouse nower days, 99% of them will spin the same 5 records ne way.

If hardhouse DJs tryed experimenting a little more then promotors would be willing to give them more time. hardhouse club nights such as superfish give its residents 2 hours and the residents really did some creative things in that time. frantic only needs an hour per DJ as the DJs seem to have no imagination

I can't comment on Frantic, but I agree that loads of hard house DJs are completely unimaginative. That's because it is the most bandwagon-jumped dance genre of the last few years.

I'm not saying all hard house DJs are shit, but a disproportionate number do play all the same tunes. My mate who is a hard house / techno promoter says 95% of the mix CD demos he gets contain the same old Nukleuz / Tidy tunes. Now it should be the job of promoters to filter out the shit DJs, but that fact is, lots of clubbers out there lap up the same old shit!

biggest critiscm of my mixes is that there havent been enough 'obvious' tunes on them.... maybe I should just play tidy and nukleuz to get bookings then play what I want when I get em

In the 'Mena
Well the fact that the "said" DJs are choosing these same old same old tidy/nukleuz style records/tunes does make them a shit DJ

so what are you saying Andy, it is the tunes that make a shit dj then???

Yes, that is exactly what I'm saying.
A DJ can only be as good as his records.

i used to disagree with this statement, but after going though a 'phase' of trying to be amazingly technical and cocking up every mix i've quickly learned that a good DJ plays good records and maybe a little extra if it fits at the time

So shall we start blaming producers/record labels too for not making/distributing that are in your opinion, tunes that you wana hear/play out?? Or shall we say this is more down to peoples opinion of what tunes/genres people like in general and the places that play nukleuz and tidy tunes are not clubs that play ur idea style of the music?
