It may be a oldish film now but has anyone seen this?

I bought it under the advice from my brother. I must admit i really did enjoy the film. Good story line, which is hard to come by now in films, lol.

But what do you think to all this time travel business that it talks about?

also, I suggest watching it with commentary switched on.... clears up a lot of things and pointed a lot of things out which I missed (like at the start when donnie is on his bike, its frank who drives past him etc)

I love this film to bits. Think its one of those films that's better discussed en masse in a pub rather than on a messageboard tho cos I'd be sitting here all day typing if I tried to give you my explanation of it!

it has nothing to do with time travel then explain why the film talks about time travel (donnie actually talks to the science teacher and mentions TIME TRAVEL) and why on the dvd it says philosophy of time travel as one of the extras in the explination??????????

LMFAO fool!

I think what you might be gettin confused with here is that time travel has different forms. Similar to what could be the matrix, i.e. there are many different versions happening that are all planned out. But you see the problem with that is how do you know the one you are seein is the correct version and not just a fake version.

What the film talks about is that every living creature's path is projected infront of them and if we can see it then we can theoritcally see our future and hence time travel as we can see into the future. But it fails to realise that for the concept to be founded you have to believe in fate. But fate is has problems to because fate means that we have can't make choices as it's all mapped out for us. So how could we "make the right choice" if it's already mapped out.

So if you don't believe in fate you wont believe in this theory of time travel.

personally i prefer time travel using super-strings.

no not at all the blurb in the trailer explains the film is about time travel as does the blurb on the dvd. I haven't explained how it all interlinks together. which it does very nicely. Which is perfect if you because it even goes into the deeper points of time travel. But if you forget that all aside it's still just a dogs bollox film.

btw tom i left it on my bed i think or it's on my desk if you want to watch it again.

The film is about parallel universes, not really time travel. However, the two subjects are closely linked of course.

his hair was a helmet, he flicked it and it just went straight back into place. it had be starched by the smoke or something.
He had this kinda retro mullet thing going on, as his hair was long all over but it was a helmet shape pointing to the back.

parallel universes is spawned out of time travel. hence the whole sequence of the m-theory and superstring and how they linked.

BUT please explain if it was parallel universe's then why do they say A) philosophy of time travel on the DVD as an extra and talk about time travel and not parallel univsers??

i think what you might be gettin confused with is that there is a concept of time travel that says that if we spawned many paths of the same life, i.e a parallel life, then we could see into the future. BUT again this is flawed because how would we know that the one we're lookin at is the one that you're following, and not the incorrect one?

scream, its not often ya right but your wrong again im afraid

you have missed the whole point of the film...Donnie Darko is a superhero - he can do anything when asleep (like in put an axe into that statue) and go thru universes. all the clues he is given throughout 'universe b' (ie, majority of film) simply show him the way to where he must end up - in bed when the engine falls from the sky which was his doing!

Roberta Sparrows book was another clue - wasnt about time travel at all, but it allowed him to realise he could return to the original universe at the end

Watch with the commentary - I didnt realise any of the above until the director explained it...

And if it was about time travel, how would the other people involved remember what had happened if Donnie went back thru time?? neeeeeeeer

how would other people remember if he went through time?? Time doesn't stop my friend if you are travelling, LOL.

as i afore mentioned my friend, parallel universes is a theory spawned out of time travel. I suggest you look this up properly instead of watchin the extras on the dvd like a good little lad now.

Way I see it....who knows more about the film, you or the person who made it

Im gonna stick with the views of the director for now thanks

As for time travel+parallel universes..... you have it wrong way round - time travel comes from parallel uiniverses... a parallel universe would be a place where you made a different choice agreed? now time travel would be the ability to go back and alter the choice which you made - you cant travel to a choice you have not made! This is why the timeline continues even though Donnie is in a different universe!

a parallel universe like you said is where another choice is made. but also remember different conditions might apply, hence why the theory states there are many universes. But what you fail to realise is that in the time travel theory which uses say a parallel universe it shows that there can be many versions of you all doing different things because of the choices you've made. But to use this as a form of time travel you would need to know what path you were walkin, i.e. which one is really you and not the fake one, as it were.

i feel the director of this movie then was probably taking these theories and pushin them together to make a good story, which they have done.

but what you also fail to realise is that the fundimental princable of time travel, is this, to actually go back in time you would only be able to go back to the point that the creation of time travel was invented.

but you mention that donnie is in a different universe. Then if he was, then why didn't he meet himself and create a paradox and then be able to totally change his future? Or maybe Frank was him? But then that wouldn't make sense as it looked nothing like him, which it should look similar if it was a parallel universe of course.

Then if he was living a different universe then why didn't the people within his universe miss him and notice the distruction that had happened when he came back?

but like i said before the whole theory is fucked if you don't believe in fate as that is what it is relying on.

Because everyone was in that parallel universe! Thats why they all remembered what had gone on at the end of the film when 'mad world' is playing!

Frank was simply another 'guide' like gretchin to help him realise what he was... they showed him the path that he must take (which you mentioned in the above post as being a pre-requisit of timetravel)

Saying that, nobody has invented timetravel yet so theories are nothing more then guess-work.... there is a lot of room for error in it and the actual answer to (if it even IS possible!) consequences and laws of timetravel may be outside of the scope of the human mind....

then if that is the case the film just ripped Sliders.

but as before mentioned it says on the dvd, philosophy behind time travel, NOT philosophy of parallel universes.

Like i said earlier in this case they are using parallel universes as a form of time travel, which is a valid theory to travel through time. but you're not actually travelling through time though are you, because like i said you can't go backwards if you haven't created the device to travel in.

a car?

LOL yeah, right. but such a vehical they believe to travel would have to be cylinder shape. Don't ask me why, but they have worked out it is the best shape for time travel.

As for time travel+parallel universes..... you have it wrong way round - time travel comes from parallel uiniverses...

how you can state that with such apparent impunity is beyond me. time travel and the concept of parallel universes are, for the time being, purely theoretical.

the ideas are bent even further as, here, they're being discussed in an entirely fictional context - indeed, a movie for which clear answers is a low priority...

Im not saying its true.... im saying thats what the directors commentary puts across as being the films 'point' as it were....
