Variation in any genre is good.

Some of the producers I speak to have said that what could be classed as 'proper' hard house is on the decline. There are a few producers (Paul King and Ian M for instance) that have retained the original tough, bouncy style of hard house.

More and more these days, the hard house that I see coming out is either hard trance or hard tech. This is not nessecarily a bad thing, as all musical genres develop, but it is just a sign of the 'phase' (if you will) that the hard dance scene as a whole is going to.

yea, true..tho a lot of people will disagree on what 'proper' hard house actually was...

As for Paul King, he's changing his style now (also left Pants & Corset )

imo all dance music is samey.
its all artificial drum loops and the same sequencers and samplers

u ask a metal head to listen to 1 of the most diverse dance sets u can find and he wont know 1 tune from another.

well to me techno isnt samey, but to the hardhouse heads it is. the problem with techy hardhouse is the hardhouse heads r jumping on the bandwaggon without ne prior experence or appretiation 4 the genre and cant work it out

just my tuppance worth ne ways

That comment seemed to be verging on elitist mr

So ur saying that if someone doesnt have "experience or appreciation" of the genre that they cant listen to it and enjoy it?? You're not born with musical experience you know, everyone has to start somewhere.... like when i went to my first hard house club i didnt have any knowledge of the genre or appreciation of it tbh, i enjoyed myself but i couldnt have told you what the name of a tune was or who it was by... the only way you find out if by keep listening to it and goin to the clubs and u pick it up... 4 years down the line and things are totally different!! I love the whole hard house/hard dance scene and i do appreciate it and now i do have experience of it and the clubs but if i hadnt "jumped on the bandwagon" (because lets face it... if u start goin regularly to any genre night, thats what you are doing) then i wouldnt and couldnt have the "experience/appreciation" for it because i wouldnt have been able to get it!! Does that make sense?

erm - not even close. i said if someone doesnt have "experience or appreciation" of a genre then it can sound samey. just like metal to me is very samey. i know its not but it sounds like it is to me

yes it does and u've completely blown what i said out of proportion. i was mearly commenting on how samey music sounds if ur inexperenced in that field. hardhouse was samey b4 i got into it. i'm sure that was the case 4 u 2. i never said cuz its samey to inexperenced people thay shouldnt listen to it. i just said they dont appretiate it as much as teh more experenced music listeners as they havnt heard enuf of it to understand it. which imo is an excuse to listen to more of it

thats y i'm trying to goto more prog nights. i love the sound but it all sound the same to me so i want to hear more of the stuff to gain a better appertiation for it

ah ok.

i personally have nowt against bandwaggon jumpers as long as they r willing to appretiate the genre as a whole rather than just follow the masses cuz its 'popular'

I agree with Mr Happy on this one.

He didn't say that you have to have experience to listen to a given style of music.
However I do agree that you have to have experience & appreciation to write it.

Otherwise you invariably end up imitating all the obvious features (e.g. the minimal / looped sound) without paying attention to the subtleties. It does not follow that you can loop any old shit, stick a hard house bassline on it and call it "techy hard house"!

i find it strange how people can write off a whole genre like that. trance is supposed to be dead. as is hardcore and prog yet those club night still pack.
