Yes, that is exactly what I'm saying. A DJ can only be as good as his records.
defo - track selection is the key to being a decent dj imo - if you cant program a set properly then it doesnt matter how good you are technically, your set will be shite!

OK Laurence, let me remind you of something.
This is an extract from Laurence's post about "AMazing sets by Glasto DJs"

I dont care whether you like Fergie tbh, just stick to your own opinions. I think he has gone too techy now, hes goin to shoot himself in the foot. I know for a fact numbers have dropped on his show in the last four months.

Far from it. There are billions of good labels / tunes out there. The problem is, most DJs buy the same fucking tunes. And in turn, a hell of a lot of clubbers put up with it. (Especially when they're off their tits on drugs, and all they care about is how "banging" or "anthemic" the music is.) Ahem.

this sounds exactly like thet "chart" syndrome.
the reason there are so many boy bands producing identical shite is cos record companies know what will sell.
same thing.
smaller niche.

Also one of my pet hates. I don't see the big deal about having a pre-release tune, it doesn't make you a good DJ! I have no qualms about mixing 3 or 4 year old tunes into my new CDs. Besides, unless you spin really well known tracks, it's not as if anyone is going to know how old the tunes are!

LittleMissLoud said: It's often what the punters wnat, as liquid eyes said. I think it's all about a happy medium (some well known stuff, and some stuff that is a bit diferent)
However, just as there are dj's who play predomenantly Tidy/ Nukleuz stuff, there are those who feel they are superior for playing mainly unrelesahed material, but often what they are playing has not been released for a reason .
Many demo CD's will have the unreleased mix of a track which ismore well known - but sometimes that unreleased mix is pretty poor - hence the better version being released.
Have you never seen karim play before then??
Not only that, but some of the stuff that gets uplaoded to generoproject.com by unsigned producers is superb!! For example, Pienaar + bamford 'Dark Side' and 'Stratosphere' are incredibly well produced tracks which shitloads of djs have been playing - Dynamix have finally got round to releasing them and so now even more DJs get chance to play them...... a quality track is a quality track whether it is released or not....the same goes for a shit track being a shit track released or not!

agree with that completely - had Edge 1 'Compounded' (oldskool track from 1991) on one of my older cds and that seemed to get more comments then the rest of the cd itself..... Like I said in previous post, a quality track is a quality track regardless of age/who produced it/whther its released or not......

there is a little arrow next to track title - click that then click DOWNLOAD hehehe
you gotta be registered first tho btw, and also, some tracks are hosted by soundlcick (will take you to a page that looks like this - http://www.soundclick.com/bands/9/rudimusic.htm - which you can then register at and download from...... i STRONGLY suggest d/loading the metal nrg track called 'paranoia' - its 190bpm remix of some heavy metal tune and its absolutly incredible.....tho waaay too fast!)
any more problems, gimme a shout and will explain if I can :-)

i agree, it shouldn't boost ego's too much, but some of the time DJ's are trying to get talent scouted or whatever, or even just impress someone in the crowd they know might be there. surely, as long as it fits the set, dropping a rare or brand new tune shows they do have some of the skills it takes to be a good DJ (ie, new, good tracks)? mebbe
