I wasnt spouting, just pointing out a fact.
At the end of the day DLP's are shite (IMO), anything but should suffice, buy what you can afford
I guess my view is biased cos i started with Technics

i started out on a pair of Sony belt drives with no pitch control, so the DLP's beat that IMO, so go for it! At the end of the day, if you can mix on them, you can mix on anything

direct drive turntables are good rather than shitty belt drives. not sure on model as im not a turntable expert Quote:
- C/W stanton 505's but the lids are cracked and without hinges.
cracked lids and no hinges isnt a real downpoint as the hinges can be annoying my m8s new 1210s mk5 dont have hinges. Lids are really only dust covers so a crack wont really cause ne probs

- Soundlab DSM5 mixer.
just had a look on the net for this and it looks pretty basic but will probably get the job done. Doesnt have equalisers it looks like but that isnt disastrous as i didnt have eqaulizers for a good yr and a half and it didnt affect my learning. They are more an advanced thing to make ur mixes sound better. But not worth having straight away if u dont know if ur gonna like doing it.
I say get them. Worth the cheap price. If u do get them remember that practice is how to get good at mixing not having lessons. Pointers from mates shud be all u need and are very useful so listen to them.
U'll also need a pair of headphones as well but if u want some cheap ones £20 will get u a semi decent pair that will get u started.

i found that learning without eq meant that i had to have it perfect each time. I have found that since using eqs i have made mistakes i wudnt norm have made as i have hidden behind the cleaner sound eqs make mixing if there is a mistake. Since realising this i have changed my use of them to minimalistic but it does depend on the track

allow you to alter the bass, mid range and treble of the track (sometimes only bass and treble). Useful but not necessary for a beginner.
U will need to upgrade l8r on tho if u get into it. But if ur only looking for something to mess around at first with i'd get them. Especially at that price. You can always upgrade l8r and u can prob get more than that amount on ebay for them when u want to upgrade.

like i said - its all down to personal style.

Totally agree Jay. The whole issue of "phasing" kick drums, for example, is a much bigger issue when you have hefty speakers/subwoofers.
NickG, maybe you have a better home system than most.
Ben, I managed without EQ controls on my first mixer, but once you've got used to using them, it's hard to go back! They really do give you a lot more flexibility & creativity.
